BJP LEADER Jagdish Verma and his wife Unman were killed by his own brother Vinod Verma and two others, police claimed here today. Police have arrested Vinod and Gopal Gaur, a resident of Musakheri area, in this connection while the third accused, Shanu Dubey, a resident of Malwa Mill area, is still at large.
Verma and his wife were found brutally murdered in their house at Sriram Nursery, near Asaram Babu Crossing, Khandwa Road on the night of June 25.
Superintendent of Police Adarsh Katiyar said that so far the police had questioned only Gopal Gaur thoroughly, and were yet to question Vinod regarding his motive behind the crime.
Regarding Gopal’s motive, the SP said that Gopal ran a STD PCO cum property broker office cum tea stall at the Navlakha Crossing, which were demolished during anti-encroachment drive.
Gopal believed that Jagdish Verma was responsible for the demolitions as he (Gopal) was aligned with former MLA Satyanarayan Patel. Apart from his animosity towards Jagdish, Gopal was lured by Vinod who told him that if his brother and his wife were killed, he (Vinod) would give him Rs 5 lakh and a flat.
Gopal had met Vinod after the former had switched camps and joined Jagdish Verma. Reconstructing the events leading to the murder, Katiyar said that on June 25 all the three had met at Nehru Stadium in the afternoon where they decided to kill Verma and his wife.
At night, armed with a pipe and axle, they waited for Jagdish to return home at the Bay Watch Restaurant situated opposite Jagdish’s house. When Jagdish entered the house, Gopal called out and when Jagdish came out, Gopal hit him with an axle.
Jagdish fell down on the verandah. By this time Vinod and Shalu had also come in, and they dragged Jagdish inside the house and hit him a number of times. Then Gopal went to the other room where Unman was watching television sitting on her bed.
The cooler was also on, but she heard Gopal enter the room and turned. Gopal hit her and she fell down, and then all the three of them hit her repeatedly. All of them then went on a motorcycle to a place on Ring Road, where they burnt their clothes and dropped their weapons in a nullah.
Police claim they found the burnt cloth, while hunt for the weapons was on. Subsequently, Vinod went to his home at Sajnagar, while Gopal and Shalu went to Omkareshwar. Gopal returned home a day later and police picked him up from his house following a tip-off that he was involved in Verma’s murder.
Vinod Verma had told the other two that no one should harm two-year-old Priya, the daughter of Jagdish, as she was too young and moreover he wanted to bring her up himself.
