At time when relations with Nepal are at a low ebb, security agencies of both the countries jointly nabbed an accused in the murder of two BJP leaders in Gujarat’s Bharuch.
“Abid Patel, who is brother of gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s close aide Javed Chikna and a prime suspect in the murder of two BJP leaders, was picked up at Indo-Nepal border and is being handed over to the Gujarat police which is probing the case,” said a home ministry official requesting anonymity.
On November 2, two BJP leaders - Shirish Bangali, former BJP president in Bharuch, and Pragnesh Mistry, city’s youth wing general secretary, were shot dead by masked men. The Gujarat police arrested nine people in this connection and during their interrogation, name of Abid Patel surfaced.
“Both Abid and Javed Chikna are alleged to have old links in Bharuch. It is suspected that at the time of murders, Abid was in India and later he managed to sneak into Nepal. As Abid was planning an exit from Nepal, he was picked up and handed over to India,” said another government official privy to the details of operation.
As the links of organised crime networks emerged in the murder of BJP leaders, the government decided to hand over the case to National Investigation Agency (NIA).
A decision is expected soon as the file is pending in home ministry, said sources.
