The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, will continue to run its undergraduate programme but will award a BSc (Research) degree instead of a BSc degree at the end of the fourth year.

After asking Delhi University to roll back its four-year under graduate programme (FYUP), the UGC had last month send circulars to three universities including IISc, Bangalore asking them to roll back their four-year programmes.

The IISc had sent a detailed clarification in this regard.

“Keeping in mind the design and curriculum of the 3+1 year integrated research programme, we have decided to combine the Bachelor of Science degree with Research. Consequently, we are going to award a BSc (Research) degree, which would very well be in conformity with the UGC specified degrees notified by it in the Gazette of India issued on July 5, 2014,” IISc director Prof Anurag Kumar said.

He said that the institute’s programme was different from a regular BSc programme and the fourth year was devoted to research. “It combines science, engineering and the humanities,” Prof Kumar told HT.

According to sources, the UGC has agreed the twin programme leading to BSc (Research) would be in conformity with its norms.
