A BSF jawan was arrested when he deserted his post with a Light Machine Gun in Balakote sector of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.

The jawan, Pawan Kumar of 183 battalion, after consuming liquor, picked up the LMG from his post and fled on Friday night, a BSF spokesman said.

While fleeing he opened fire in air but no one was injured.

Kumar was chased by police and security personnel and was finally overpowered from a nearby village late in the night. In the process he suffered injuries in his arm and was shifted to a local hospital, he said.

A case has been registered against the erring jawan in the local police station. He is being treated under custody.

Panic gripped in the Balakote area for more than two hours as security forces and police chased the jawan carrying LMG and people ran for cover to escape the firing.

The spokesman, however, denied reports that two persons were injured in the firing resorted to by the deserted jawan.

No one was injured in the firing. Kumar fired few rounds in the air but not aimed at anyone, he said.
