For Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) the celebration did not end with New Year bash rather it will be in celebration mode for the coming five months.

The BSP leaders and workers have already started gearing up for the 54th birthday of Chief Minister Mayawati on January 15.

The party has been observing the birthday of Mayawati as Arthik Sahyog Diwas (financial contribution day) raising fund to fill up the party coffer. This year the birthday will be commemorated as public welfare day. The Chief Minister is expected to launch several welfare schemes on January 15 for the masses especially for those coming from the weaker section of the society.

Following the birthday of the party chief the BSP plans to launch a nationwide membership drive. Earlier the membership drive remained limited to the castes that were considered support base of the BSP including dalits and other backward castes. To strengthen its mass base the party plans to go for an open membership drive.

The social engineering formula has already paid dividend the party not only gave an absolute majority government after gap of 18 years said a BSP leader and added that not only the dalits but party has gained support of the forward, backward and minority communities too. This time the party plans to focus on forward castes and minority community members to consolidate the gains made during the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections.

"The members would be screened and only those who abide by the ideology of the party would be given membership", said a coordinator. In the meeting of the party workers held in August last year the membership fee was increased from Rs 20 to Rs 40.

The party plans to celebrate the 25 years of its formation in March. In a meeting of the state presidents and coordinators of various states held in Lucknow on December 29 the Chief Minister Mayawati announced that silver jubilee of the party would be observed in March. The presidents of various state units were directed to strengthen the base of the party in the respective states. Founded on April 14, 1984, the BSP completed the 25 years of its foundation in 2009. In view of the Lok Sabha election the silver jubilee celebration was delayed.

The silver jubilee celebration will coincide with the birth anniversary of the founder of BSP- Kanshi Ram on March 15, while the birth anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar will be observed on April 14. It would be followed with celebration of three years in power on May 13.
