An air-conditioned private luxury bus fell into a culvert late on Tuesday night near Vellore on the Chennai-Bangalore highway, killing 23 persons. There were five women among the deceased.
The accident occurred around 11.30pm.
According to the police, the driver of the Pollachi-bound bus took a sharp turnbut he lost control of the vehicle and it fell into a culvert.
The diesel tank caught fire due to the impact of the accident and the bus was completely gutted. The driver and one passenger survived. The passenger, Karthikai Rajan, told the police that he managed to escape by breaking open one of the windows.
The bodies were taken to the local government hospital for postmortem, the police said.
