The Union Cabinet is likely to formulate its views on the issue of legalising gay sex next week.

"Maybe next week. The Cabinet has been requested to formulate its views. When the Cabinet takes a decision, it will be announced," Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters when asked whether the government had taken a view on the issue after the Delhi High Court legalised gay sex among consensual adults.

Following the High Court order, the Supreme Court had asked the government to present its stand on the issue and
posted the matter for hearing on September 14.

The government had set up a three-member panel to formulate its response and convey it to the Union Cabinet
which will take a final call on the matter.

The panel, comprising Law Minister M Veerappa Moily, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, has already analysed the pros and cons of the Delhi High Court judgement on the issue.
