Bollywood singer-turned politician, Babul Supriyo seems all set to get a berth in Modi’s council of ministers. BJP state president Rahul Sinha on Saturday almost confirmed that Supriyo is likely to be the face of Bengal in NDA council of ministers.
However, his portfolio is yet to be finalised by Modi.
“Yes I have been called up by the Prime Minister. I am on my way to Delhi. I am ready to take any responsibility the Prime Minister gives me,” said Babul Supriyo talking to HT.
“We have learnt from our sources that the Prime Minister himself called Babul Supriyo. Supriyo will represent Bengal in Modi’s council of ministers, however, his portfolio has not yet been finalised,” Sinha said.
“This time in cabinet reshuffle Bengal’s name will be included, we are hoping to see Supriyo taking oath tomorrow,” added Sinha.
According to sources, Supriyo, MP from Asansol, was called up by the Prime Minister himself and was asked to be present in Delhi at the time of the cabinet reshuffle.
Last time, Supriyo had missed the bus during the formation of the cabinet after BJP came to power, but this time he seems to have made it to Modi’s council of ministers.
Party sources stated Supriyo's induction is to be a part of the BJP's plan to make major inroads in the state and carry forward the success of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in the run up to the civic and assembly polls scheduled for 2016.
The move will also answer Mamata Banerjee’s claim that Bengal has always been neglected by the Centre and continues to be ignored even with the Modi government in power.
“During Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s regime, two of our MPs from Bengal were made ministers. Now, our supreme leader, Narendra Modi will decide which portfolio will be given to Supriyo. But, if an MP from Bengal gets a berth in Modi’s cabinet, this will not just strengthen the state unit, but also boost the morale of BJP supporters across the state,” said Ritesh Tiwari, general secretary, BJP.
During Vajpayee’s regime, state BJP MP got a berth in the cabinet along with Mamata Banerjee who had an alliance with NDA. Mamata Banerjee was railway minister and Ajit Panja minister of state for external affairs during that regime.
State BJP leaders (Tapan Sikdar minister of state for telecom) and Satyabrata Mukherjee minister of state for chemicals) were part of the then NDA ministry between 2000 and 2004 NDA.
