The Narendra Modi government is planning to take the ordinance route to amend the land acquisition act to make it more industry-friendly. The rural development ministry is expected to ask for the cabinet’s approval on Monday.
The Centre is in a hurry to bring in amendments to the legislation so it can exclude 13 central laws — regarding mandatory social impact assessment for all projects, ban on acquisition of multi-crop land, and changes in the definition of affected families — from the act’s purview.
The Land Act, 2013, which came into force on January 1 this year, specifically says that these 13 laws — seen as anti-industry — have to be amended within a year or they would come under the purview of the act.
Since the Centre failed to pass the amendments in the winter session, it needs to bring in the ordinance before January 1, 2015.
