Campaign for second phase polls ends in Manipur

india Updated: Apr 20, 2009 17:52 IST

Campaigning for the second phase of election to the prestigious Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency on April 22 ended on Monday, that did not witness any senior politician except Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visiting the area for electioneering.

Manipur is the only state where the second phase elections will be held on April 22 while in the rest of the country it will be held the next day, election officials said here.

The campaign was a thoroughly low key affair with no national or regional leader of major political parties addressing any meeting except AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi who addressed a public rally at Churachandpur district for only about 10 minutes.

The constituency will witness a keen contest among M Nara of CPI, T Meinya of Congress and Th Chaoba of Manipur People's party, although there are seven candidates in the fray. A 8,25,019-strong electorate, including 4.34 lakh female voters, would exercise their franchise at 970 polling stations, election officials said.
