Campaigning ended on Tuesday evening for four assembly seats in Haryana and Punjab where by-elections are to be held on May 22 to seal the fate of 81 candidates, including former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal in fray.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and INLD chief Om Parkash Chautala were among those campaigned for the three seats of Adampur, Gohana and Indri in Haryana for which there are 77 candidates in fray.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, BJP Legislature Party leader Manoranjan Kalia, Punjab Congress Chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal were among those who hit the roads in the Amritsar.
South assembly constituency where there are four contestants. Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh did not campaign in Amritsar citing health problems.
The by-poll for the three seats in Haryana arose due to the disqualification of sitting MLAs from Adampur, Gohana and Indri Bhajan Lal, Dharam Pal Malik and Rakesh Kamboj respectively under the anti-defection law after they joined the Haryana Janhit Congress -BL (HJC-BL) formed by Bhajan Lal's son Kuldeep Bishnoi and the Amritsar South seat fell vacant due the death of sitting Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Raminder Singh Bolaria.
The 41 candidates in fray for the Adampur seat included former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal's son and INLD Chief Om Parkash Chautala's younger brother Ranjit Singh (Congress), former finance minister Sampat Singh (INLD) and Parbhat Singh (CPIM). There are five other Bhajan Lal's, all Independents, in fray for the Adampur seat.
Rakesh Kamboj (HJC-BL), Bhim Sen Mehta (Congress) Ram Kumar Arya (BJP), Ashok Kashyap (INLD) and Zila Singh (CPI) were among the 13 in the race for the Indri seat in Karnal district.
The 23 contestants for Gohana assembly seat in Sonipat district included Dharampal Singh Malik (HJC-BL), former Chairman of Haryana Public Service Commissioner (HPSC) K C Bangar (INLD)and Pardeep Sangwan (BJP).
