Can’t make surya namaskar compulsory: HC

Adding to the discomfiture of the Madhya Pradesh government, the MP High Court in an interim order once again restrained it from making compulsory worshipping the sun and a certain type of yoga in schools. Sravani Sarkar reports.

Adding to the discomfiture of the Madhya Pradesh (MP) government, the MP High Court in an interim order on Friday once again restrained it from making compulsory worshipping the sun and a certain type of yoga in schools.

The high court had issued a similar order on January 24, 2007, after the state government introduced surya namaskar (sun salutation) and pranayam in schools in December 2006. This order had come on a petition filed by the Jamiat-e-Ulema Hind.

A bench comprising Chief Justice AK Patnaik and Justice Ajit Singh said: “The students should not be compelled to follow the practices and no prohibitive action like de-recognising schools would be initiated for not complying (with) the order...”
