At least 10 people were killed and four critically injured when a canter rammed into a stationary truck on the national highway-8 here on Wednesday.
According to the police, the incident took place at Rampura Crossing at around 4:30 am. All the victims were labourers and were returning home from IMT Manesar.
A majority of the victims belonged to Sidhartha Nagar and Basti districts of Uttar Pradesh. They had been living in Sonia Vihar in Delhi.
“The labourer’s took a lift in the mini truck which was laden with iron rods and bricks. When the vehicle hit the stationary truck, rods and bricks fell on the workers, causing serious head and spinal injuries to them,” said Maheshwar Dayal, DCP east Gurgaon.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the canter lost control after one of the tyres of the vehicle burst. “The impact would have been less if the truck was not parked on the road,” said Laxman Yadav, a local resident.
All the injured, including canter driver Asgar Ali, have been admitted to Bala Jee Hospital, where their condition is said to be critical. Ali has been booked for negligent driving and both the vehicles have been impounded, the police said.
Five of the deceased were identified as Ajij (35), Dilip (28), Furtu (30) , Samshad (60) , and Ramzaan (21).
