Car hits eight people in MP; one dead, seven injured

A speeding Alto car (MP09/CA9919) hit eight people of a family when they were sitting around a bonfire near Khargone town in MP to beat the winter chill.

Hamida (55), died on the spot, while seven others were injured in the mishap.

The incident occurred at Maheshwarjal Kothi on Maheshwar–Dhamnod road under Maheshwar police station limit, about 65 kilometres north of Khargone district headquarters, around 8 am on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses said Anwar Khan and seven other members of his family were sitting around a bonfire after having morning tea. A speeding car came from near Jalkothi and hit all the eight people. While Anwar Khan received minor injuries and was discharged soon after treatment, the others were seriously injured.

There was chaos at the spot after the accident. The driver managed to flee from the spot in the car. Locals informed the police and took the injured to a hospital from where they were referred to Indore's MY Hospital.

Sub-divisional officer of police Sunil Joli said the driver managed to flee from the spot in the car which is registered in the name of Jagdish Patidar of Indore. Investigation is on in the case, he said.

The condition of Raziya, Afsana, Jilani, Jahida, Nasiya and seven-year-old Nilofar is critical as they have suffered multiple fractures.
