It's official! The good ol' cassette walkman has retired. After the demise of the floppy disk early this year, Sony has stopped manufacting the now obsolete cassette walkman, Mashable reports.
The final batch of the walkman was shipped to Japanese retailers. Once this batch is sold, new players will not be manufactured.
Incidentally, portable music players or walkman made a grand entry in the market on July 1, 1979 in Japan.
What is somewhat ironical is that the demise of the walkman has come a day prior to iPod's ninth anniversary, one of the major culprits in the decline of walkman. Popularity of CDs and mp3 players also contributed to the end of an era.
