Cassette walkman is no more

india Updated: Oct 25, 2010 18:41 IST

It's official! The good ol' cassette walkman has retired. After the demise of the floppy disk early this year, Sony has stopped manufacting the now obsolete cassette walkman, Mashable reports.

The final batch of the walkman was shipped to Japanese retailers. Once this batch is sold, new players will not be manufactured.

Incidentally, portable music players or walkman made a grand entry in the market on July 1, 1979 in Japan.

They were called Soundabout in US and Stowaway in UK. Even though it only sold 3000 units in the first month, Sony managed to up the sales and hit 200 million marks in the product's life span of 30 years.

WalkmanWhat is somewhat ironical is that the demise of the walkman has come a day prior to iPod's ninth anniversary, one of the major culprits in the decline of walkman. Popularity of CDs and mp3 players also contributed to the end of an era.
