An Indian has been charged with killing his pregnant daughter, son-in-law and grandson by setting their apartment on fire in Illinois — a crime, authorities said, he committed because he was upset over his daughter marrying a man from a “lower caste”.

Subhash Chander, 57, was denied bail on Monday.

Monika Rani, 22, Rajesh Kumar, 36, and their son, Vansh, 3, were killed in the weekend blaze. Rani was five months pregnant.

Chander told police that he was upset with his daughter and son-in-law because they married without his consent and he considered Kumar to be from a “lower caste”, First Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Milan was quoted as saying by the media here.

But Chander’s sister Kamla Devi said this was not true. She said the family accepted the marriage and that caste was not a factor for the family at all.

On Saturday night, Chander bought gas from a gas station for his son, but decided to give it to his daughter instead. At the door, Kumar refused to let him in. He told police that Kumar pushed him and some gas spilled from the container onto the carpet. Chander told police that he became “upset and angry”, pulled a lighter from his pocket and set the carpet on fire. All three died of carbon-monoxide poisoning.
