Five judges of the state subordinate judiciary who cheated during an LLM exam by sneaking in notebooks and study material into the exam hall, were suspended by Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday.
The judges suspended are Ranga Reddy District Senior Civil Judge K. Ajitsimharao, Second Additional District Judge Vijayanand, Bapatla Senior Civil Judge Srinivasa Chary, Anantapur Senior Civil Judge M. Kishtappa and Warangal Junior Civil Judge Hanumantha Rao, High Court sources said.
The judges, said to be in their 40s, had assumed that their brazenness would be ignored by the staff in view of their high social standing. But they had not bargained for a flying squad of invigilators (formed to check exam malpractices) suddenly landing in University Arts College at Warangal (150 km from Hyderabad) where they were taking the exam.
N Manohar, the university's additional controller of examinations, who headed the flying squad, said he was in a meeting in the university when he was alerted about some students cheating. When he entered the room, he was shocked to find some persons copying openly with textbooks and notes lying all around.
"It did not matter to us that they were judges. For us, they were students," Manohar said.
Besides the five judges, three lawyers were also found copying from smuggled material.
What helped clinch the case was recording of the cheating by a TV channel cameraman accompanying the flying squad.
