CBI conducts lie-detector test on Badaun victims’ kin

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday began conducting polygraph tests on four persons, including an eye-witness and the fathers of two teenage girls allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Badaun in May to determine their role in the crime, if any, and the authenticity of their versions.

The CBI is exploring all angles in the case, including that of honour killing and property dispute, and posed queries about certain inconsistencies in the sequence of events associated with the crime narrated by them and their alleged role in hiding, then tampering with the mobile phone set of the elder among the two deceased victims, according to a CBI source.

The polygraph tests will be conducted till Wednesday at the city-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory, for which the CBI had earlier taken the consent of the four persons and the trial court’s permission, said the source.

A family member however denied any wrongdoing on its part and alleged that the CBI was trying to frame them.

HT had first reported on June 29 about the CBI’s retrieval of the damaged phone set allegedly from the residence of a relative of the victims, which brought the family members of the deceased cousins under its scanner. The phone has been sent to a forensic laboratory.

On June 7, state director general of police AL Banerjee had suggested that the killings might have been triggered by property dispute and family honour.

The CBI wants to ascertain why the victims’ families allegedly shared parts of the monetary help they had received from state agencies with case witnesses, ostensibly on grounds that the duo was poverty-stricken. The CBI is also examining why the victims’ bodies were found close to an accused person’s residence.
