The Tamil Nadu government suspended Archana Ramasundaram on Thursday, the same day she took over as the CBI’s additional director in New Delhi. Besides, the IPS officer of the state cadre has been ordered to stay in Chennai as long as the suspension order remains in force.

Issuing the order, chief secretary Mohan Verghese Chukanth said disciplinary action was being contemplated against the officer. “During the period this order remains in force, the headquarters of Archana Ramasundaram, IPS, will be Chennai,” the order stated.

The state had not yet allowed her request to be relieved from her current posting as the chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services’ Recruitment Board. Her request has been pending for nearly three months.

But Ramasundaram did not wait for the state’s clearance and took charge as the CBI additional director. She signed a charge transfer certificate and sent it to her second-in-command in the recruitment board, where she was posted since 2012, sources said.

The IPS officer chose to join the CBI quickly because a PIL challenging her appointment was to come up for hearing on Friday. The petition, filed by Vineet Narain, questioned her appointment over the candidature of RK Pachanda, recommended by the selection committee.

Ramasundaram was appointed to the CBI post on February 6.
