The CBI on Saturday grilled former Gujarat home minister Amit Shah in connection with the controversial encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others, days before the agency is expected to file a supplementary chargesheet that will name the case plotters.

An agency official part of the investigation said Shah was grilled by the CBI’s top officials. Specifics of the interrogation, including its duration and where it was carried out, have not been disclosed.

Shah is likely to be called again for questioning as the CBI focuses on unravelling the conspiracy around the shootout. "The supplementary chargesheet will focus on the conspiracy of the entire operation starting from securing the custody of the deceased, the plotting and the execution of the staged shootout," the CBI official said.

Earlier in July, in its primary chargesheet, the CBI had stated that the encounter was staged and IB officials had connived to kill the four people along with the Gujarat police. The agency has claimed that the Ishrat and the men found dead along with her were already in the custody of the police and IB.

The CBI has indicted eight policemen, including top cop PP Pandey.

Shah, touted as Gujarat chief minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s right hand man, is in charge of the party’s Uttar Pradesh operations.

Shah is already a key accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and is currently out on bail.

In June 2004, Ahmedabad crime branch officials had gunned down four persons including Mumbra resident Ishrat Jahan, claiming she and three others with her were LeT terrorists on a mission to assassinate Modi.

However, a judicial and police probe conducted at the court's intervention dismissed the police version calling the encounter a "cold blooded murder".
