ARMED WITH a Supreme Court verdict, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team is all set to arrive in the State capital to begin a probe into the Krishnanand Rai murder case.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Krishnanand Rai and seven others were killed in a Ghazipur shootout on November 29 last year.

Last week, the Supreme Court turned down the UP Government’s plea against a CBI probe ordered by the Allahabad High Court.

The case allegedly involved don-turned MLA Mukhtar Ansari, his MP brother Afzal Ansari and their brother-in-law Ataur-rehman alias Babu. The CBI had earlier declared a reward of Rs 2 lakh on Babu in connection with the kidnap and murder of coal tycoon Nandlal Rungta.

Sources in the CBI said the team would first contact top special task force (STF) officials to collect details of the investigation conducted soon after the murder. The STF investigated the case before the CBI probe was ordered.

The CBI sleuths will also meet the then STF SSP Akhil Kumar who is now the Aligarh SSP.

The team will ask STF sleuths why they refrained from conducting a voice examination of main accused Mukhtar Ansari. The STF had procured a court order for the examination, but the jailed don had refused to go through the process. The examination was required to match the voice in the conversation recorded by the cops before and after the shootout.

The STF was aware of a gathering of gangsters Firdaus, Munna Bajrangi and Sanjiv Maheshwari at Ansari’s Mohammadabad residence in Ghazipur. A telephonic conversation between the gangsters and the jailed don was recorded. It indicated that a conspiracy was hatched for the sensational attack on BJP MLA Rai.

However, the STF sleuths were not given the green light to lay a trap for the gangsters.

The CBI sources said the sleuths would probe into who in the corridors of power played a key role in shielding gangsters and asking the STF to withdraw from keeping watch on activities of Ansari’s henchmen.

The CBI sleuths have information that a group of powerful people helped jailed don Ansari in hatching the conspiracy to kill Rai.  The cops will interrogate the then Mohammadabad police station house officer. The SHO was transferred after Rai’s murder.

The preliminary STF investigation had revealed that the SHO was aware of the dreaded gangsters’ presence at Ansari’s residence. All of the outlaws were wanted in heinous crimes, but the SHO neither sent a report to his seniors, nor made an effort to trap them. Instead, the SHO used to help the gangsters visit the don in Ghazipur jail. The sources said the first phase of the CBI investigation would include making inquiries from police officials concerned in the STF and the Ghazipur district police.
