Chief election commissioner VS Sampath has asked public broadcaster - Doordarshan and All India Radio - to create voter awareness and about the model code of conduct during this summer's elections.
Sampath, while addressing head of regional news units and correspondents of AIR and DD, also aksed the public broadcaster to ensure error-free electoral rolls by informing the voters about enrollment so that no one is deprived of his or her rights.
Information and broadcasting ministry secretary Bimal Jhulka said the dealing with the paid news was a big challenge and the media should undertake self-regulation in this regard. He also said there was a need for a broadcasting regulatory authority in wake of increasing number of news channels.
Director general of AIR news, Archana Datta said the national radio will make more use of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter this time to inform people about the election process. She assured the chief election commissioner that AIR will ensure accurate, balanced and credible reporting during the elections.
