For an actor with hits like Munnabhai MBBS, Mohabbatein and more recently the critically acclaimed Yahaan under his belt, Jimmy Shergill has a lot to talk about. He was recently in town to shoot for his next film, Delhii Heights.

“So far whatever bit of Delhi we have seen in the movies has been restricted to the school or college years. Otherwise, the focus has been on heritage and monuments. In Delhii Heights, we are trying to focus on the urban families who live in Delhi, their lives and lifestyle,” says the actor who has a home and most of his family here in the Capital.

Looking back, Jimmy recalls his experience of living in Gorakhpur before moving to Punjab in 1985. “It as a very trying time for my family. Though I did not have to face much of the issues as I as studying at a residential school in Lucknow.” With a pause he adds, “We had a lovely farm, I spent almost all my time in the holidays there.”

Moving over to the more serious schooling he received on reaching Mumbai, “I took classes in acting from Roshan Taneja after my brother coaxed me to try a hand at acting. Initially it was all too difficult. There were pages and pages of dialogues that I had to memorise and then present with the perfect diction, pauses and emotions,” he laughs.

“I thought of quitting many a times but my friends and well-wishers never let me lose hope.” “Inhibitions-or losing them-that’s what acting is about. I don’t know about theatre, but I love acting because of the camera. Without it, that thing wouldn’t come from inside.

That haunting ‘drrrrr’ sound of the camera, it makes you go blank for a few seconds. From the moment they say ‘start camera’ to to the moment they say ‘action’ — in those 10 seconds, you do a 100-metre dash.

The feeling is actually like that!” From his debut film Maachis  under Gulzaar saab to his latest release, the much-talked about directorial debut of veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, Yun Hota To Kya Hota, Shergill says he as honoured to be a part of every project.

“Come on, who could turn down Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial?” he laughs about his latest. Jimmy Shergill will next be seen in Onir’s Bas Ek Pal where he stars with Urmila Matondkar, Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Suri.
