The Centre is keeping a "close watch" on the situation in the wake of Friday's twin blasts in New Delhi's Jama Masjid and ordered beefing up of security in the capital.

These blasts were "attempts of desperate elements to disturb peace and harmony. The Government will foil the designs of the terrorists," Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who visited the blast site and the LNJP hospital where the injured are admitted, said.

"The Centre is keeping a close watch on the situation and security has been beefed up," he said.

He also added that he was in close touch with Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul and other senior officials. "The situation is under control," he said.

Patil also appealed to people across the country to maintain peace and calm.
