The Central government may not seek review of the Supreme Court order quashing reservation for Jats under the other backward class (OBC) category. Both the Congress and the BJP had supported agitations demanding reservation for Jats.
The reason is that it isn’t a strong legal ground for seeking a review as the Supreme Court had cited the National Commission for Backward Classes report against providing reservation for Jats.
A senior government functionary said the final decision on the filing of the review petition will be taken after consulting the law ministry. “But, as of now, there does not appear to be sufficient ground to seek a review of the SC judgment,” the functionary said, adding that the government has to respect the court order.
There is also a belief in the government that the SC order will also put an end to emerging trend of communities seeking reservation on economic backwardness. The Centre’s view will, however, not prevent states such as Rajasthan to file a review petition in the SC if they desired, the functionary said.
