The Centre has accorded sanction for 10,000 tents to earthquake-affected areas of erstwhile Doda district. The decision was taken after union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Over 11,000 houses have been partially and 5,736 houses severely damaged due to the strong tremor that rocked Doda-Himachal belt on May 1, according to the damage report submitted to divisional headquarters.
According to the preliminary damage report submitted by the district administration, nearly 3,500 tents and 15,000 blankets are immediately required. The report says Rs 5 core are urgently required under NCRF/SDRF rules for compensating loss suffered to private property.
Another Rs 1.50 crore was required for restoring damaged government infrastructure. The reports from inaccessible areas of Marwah, Dacchan, Padder and Chatroo are still awaited and it will take some more time to consolidate the figures minister of state for home Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo on Sunday welcomed the decision to the Centre. This will be in addition to the 1,000 tents and 2,000 blankets already sent by Red Cross Society of India from New Delhi.
The minister visited Sangrambhatta, Bilwar, Chirhal, Bunjwar and Dugga, areas of the Kishtwar district.
He said the persistent aftershocks had further aggravated the situation forcing hundreds of people to spend uneasy nights in the open.
“This has necessitated distribution of tents amongst the quake victims,” the minister said, adding it had inculcated fear psychosis amongst the people in the district.
Kitchloo directed the district administration to expedite the instructions of chief minister so that all relief measures were taken to ameliorate the sufferings of people. The state government had decided to compensate the quake victims of former Doda district on the pattern of victims of Leh cloudburst that struck Ladakh a couple of years ago.
