The Centre on Monday sought a report from the Jharkhand government over the alleged conspiracy to convert a shooting champion to Islam by her husband through force, described by the saffron brigade as another instance of “love jihad”.

Jharkhand’s capital also observed a day-long bandh on Monday, called by right-wing groups which saw a larger gameplan in the alleged torture of Tara Shahdeo by her husband Ranjit Kohli alias Raquibul Khan (Hassan) to convert her to Islam.

Sources said that the home ministry has sought all facts of the case from the Jharkhand government.

Jharkhand director general of police Rajeev Kumar, however, said that they had “not received any communication so far”.

Kohli went into hiding after Tara filed a complaint with police.

State BJP leaders have demanded a CBI probe into the “forceful conversion” and also sought security for the victim and her family.

“We want the police to scrutinise every person linked with the victim’s husband. We also demand that the CBI should investigate the case as it is a sensitive issue,” said Ranchi MLA and former speaker CP Singh.

Ranchi police said that a few private vehicles were damaged by bandh supporters in some parts of the city though the district administration had clamped Section 144 CrPC in the city.

A large number of security personnel were also deployed across the capital to maintain law and order.

Bandh supporters also put up roadblocks by burning tyres at several intersections during the bandh period.

Very few vehicles plied on the city roads while shops, business establishments and educational institutions too were closed.

“We have arrested 95 bandh supporters,” said Ranchi city superintendent of police (SP) Anup Birthray.

Last Wednesday, Tara Shahdeo lodged a complaint with Hindpiri police station against her husband claiming that Kohli used to mentally and physically torture her to convert to Islam since their marriage on July 17. Kohli went into hiding after the complaint was lodged.

Tara also said that her husband had converted to Islam five years back and hid the fact from her.

Shahdeo met Kohli during her shooting sessions in Hotwar.

Police have sealed three of the accused’s residence in the state capital and have also seized seven cars.

A special team led by a DSP rank officer has been formed to nab Kohli. An inspector rank officer is investigating the case.

The police have lodged an FIR against Kohli under the IPC sections 498-a, 153-a and 295-a.

Interestingly, police have claimed that Kohli’s mother Kaushalya Devi was a Muslim before her marrige to Harman Kohli. He said they were trying to ascertain if she had converted to Hinduism after marriage.

Police also claimed to have found no documentary proof that Kohli had converted to Islam as claimed by his wife.
