As part of a larger plan to re-energise the children’s film movement in the country and increase viewership of good Indian children’s films in the metros, the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI) will be screening a special package of children’s films throughout May.

Titled Summer Bonanza, the festival is organised in association with the Films Division. “We have timed Summer Bonanza with the on-going school holidays in Mumbai. “Twenty-three films will be screened between May 3 and May 31 in a bid to create awareness about children’s films in India,” says Monica Wahi, creative consultant, CSFI.

For kids only
The package to be showcased includes a range of children’s genres from adventure to fantasy to wildlife. Many of these films have won prestigious national and international awards.Recent films, like the latest animation series Krish Trish and Baltiboy will be showcased. The management of Summer Bonanza will also show older gems like Shyam Benegal’s Charandas Chor, Santosh Sivan’s Halo and Malli, and Pankaj Advani’s Sunday.

An interaction with the director/cast, wherever possible, has also been organised after every screening. “Summer Bonanza is essentially an attempt on our part to revive the culture of going to the theatre and watching a children’s film. It is also an attempt to exhibit some of the wonderful recent films, as well as older ones, that we have produced, that unfortunately have never been seen by our young urban audiences,” says Wahi.

Should the screenings be successful, the CSFI will convert Summer Bonanza into an annual event and also replicate it in
other cities. The CFSI is an autonomous government body that is committed to produce and exhibit wonderful children’s films.
