Chess, a game that is not really exposed to the elements, should not be affected much by the soaring or dipping of the temperature. Yet, a player who is under the weather may find it difficult to think and plan his game.
The cold wave is taking its toll on even the best in the business. As GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, currently sharing the second spot with 3.5 points in the Parsvnath International Chess Tournament, said: “I have had a bad tournament. I am down with cold and feeling feverish. I think the organisers should have made sure that the venue is kept warm.”

Meanwhile, Grandmaster Neelotpal Das had a tough time winning the fourth round against Chennai youngster Haribalu V. The rest of the GMs had easy outings, with six Indians sharing the lead.
GM Abhijeet Kunte beat S.P. Sethuraman while IM Abhijeet Gupta beat IM Chandrashekhar Gokhale in with ease. The other Indians in lead were GM Deepan Chakravarthy, IM Arun Prasad, GM Dibyendu Barua, Araghyadip Das, apart from Uzbekistan’s GM Saidali Iuldachev and GM Shukhrat Safin.
Top seed Alexey Dreev recovered from his draw in Round Three that toppled him from the lead, to win against Mehdi Hasan of Bangladesh.
GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, playing with white, played a Ruy Lopez opening and went on to beat Babu N Sudhakar, who had drawn with top seed Alexey Dreev in the previous round. Ganguly won as his opponent was under time pressure in the end. “He had one minute on the clock as opposed to my 24. I could not think much as I am suffering from fever,” Ganguly said.
