India's Chetan Anand and Saina Nehwal are top seed players in the men's and women's sections of the India International Badminton Tournament that commences on November 14, 2006 at the suburban Goregaon Sports Club.
Anand and Saina, fresh from her exploits in the World Junior Championship last week where she finished runner-up, are the defending champions in the tournament, which was earlier known as the Asian Satellite event.
Anand, who has been given a first round bye along with other seeded players in both the sections, is followed by his compatriot P Kashyap in the ranking list following the late withdrawal of national champion Anup Sridhar, seeded second, because of an ankle injury.
In the qualifying rounds featuring Indian players today, Assam's Bibari Basumatary fought hard against Dhanya Nair before advancing into the women singles main draw.
Having lost the first game at 20-22, Bibari was in danger of being knocked out in straight game when she turned the match around from 20-all in the second game to eke out a 20-22, 22-20, 21-7 victory.
In another hard-fought final qualifying round clash, Pune's Neha Pandit faced stiff resistance from Anita Ohlon before securing her berth in the tournament with a 12-21, 21-15, 21-19 verdict.
