Congress president Sonia Gandhi accused the decade old BJP government of depriving the masses of the benefits of various welfare programmes introduced by the Centre.

Addressing a rally at Dusshera Maidan in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, she charged the BJP government of “rampant corruption” during its rule. “What development, for whom and where? The huge funds released are channelised for personal benefits. Is the government meant for this? she asked.

The UPA chairperson raised questions over the way the BJP is countering the Maoist problem. “What has been done to control the Maoist menace?” she said referring to the Jhiram ghati incident at Darbha, where the Maoists killed several Congress leaders on May 25.

Hinting at the (RSS), she cautioned, “An ideology that divides the society cannot ensure well-being. Those who create rift between brothers cannot become yours”.

She also expressed regret over the state government’s failure in implementing welfare programmes in the state.

Earlier in the day, she addressed another public rally in Ambikapur, north Chhattisgarh, where she promised, “Chhattisgarh will see immense growth if the Congress comes to power here”, and appealed the people to vote for the party.
