A 2002-batch IPS officer and district superintendent of police Rahul Sharma shot himself to death with his service revolver in the officer mess at Bilaspur on Monday afternoon.

Sharma (37) who returned at work two days ago after availing a 15-day long leave committed suicide in the bathroom, the police said. The constables who accompanied him told that the officer shifted to the mess on Sunday night with his luggage from his official residence where he was staying with his family.

According to the police his body was found lying in the pool of blood. He was rushed to Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences where he was declared as brought dead.

Sharma was transferred to Bilaspur from Raigarh district in January 2011. He also served as the SP of Maoist-hit district of Dantewada in south Bastar for two years before he was posted at Raigarh.

Speculations are rife over the reasons that provoked Sharma to take the extreme step. Some are citing the family tension while others pointing to his stress emanating from the differences he had with his senior in Bilaspur over the professional functioning.

The state home secretary NK Aswal ruled out any possibility of the IPS officer committing suicide out of the professional grumbling. "He was an excellent officer and never expressed any dissatisfaction during his tenure as the SP of three districts. Only the investigation will throw light on the plausible reason that instigated the officer to commit suicide", Aswal said.
