Tariq, a key sharpshooter working for mobster Chhota Shakeel, was gunned down by Delhi police in Roorkee town of Uttaranchal.

"Tariq was traced in Roorkee but when police asked him to surrender he started to fire and was shot down in retaliatory fire," said Karnal Singh, joint commissioner of the special cell of Delhi Police.

Singh said Tariq was named in over 13 cases of murder and extortion in Delhi and Mumbai and was arrested in 1997 from Lajpat Nagar area of the Capital with 10 kilograms of RDX.

Police had announced a reward Rs 50,000 for him, the official said.

The sharpshooter was a resident of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.

Officials said they were trying to find out what brought him to the Uttaranchal town.

"We do not know why he was in Roorkee. He could have been in the city to carry out some crime," said senior official of the police.
