OVER A dozen people including several policemen were injured in a clash between villagers and police after the death of a minor girl in an accident on the bypass road near Bilkhiria on Thursday morning.

The angry mob set the erring truck ablaze and indulged in heavy stone pelting. Several police vehicles were damaged in the attack. The police lobbed tear gas shells and fired in the air to control the mob. In the end the police resorted to lathi charge to bring the situation under control.

CSP Govindpura Shyamlal Yadav said that Ruchika, 10, daughter of Achal Singh, a resident of Khajuri Kalan village near Piplani was crossing the road in the morning when she came in the way of a speedily driven truck. She was going to the fields when the truck ran over her.

The girl died on the spot itself. Irate residents of Khajuri Kalan village and surrounding areas took to streets and staged a chakka jam. They chased the truck and caught the driver. The truck was set ablaze. The police rushed to the spot, rescued the driver from the mob and tried to calm down tempers.

But residents were so angry that they did not let the fire tender douse the fire. They were demanding compensation and were angry that the speed breaker was not constructed on the road despite repeated demands as accidents were occurring on the road quite frequently.

Meanwhile, a section of residents went on rampage and stoned police vehicles. Vajra and Chetak vehicles were damaged and half-a-dozen policemen were injured. CSP (Govindpura) Shyamlal Yadav also received injuries.

Others injured included two sub-inspectors and several constables. The CSP’s gunman and the person handling the tear gas shells were also injured. The police fired half-a-dozen shots in the air and used tear gas to disperse the mob.

The situation remained volatile for almost 45 minutes and after lathi-charge the 200-strong crowd dispersed. Almost half-a-dozen residents were injured as well. All the injured including policemen and residents were rushed to the hospital.

The Bilkhiria police have registered a case of negligent driving leading to death against the truck driver besides a case of rioting and attack on police against unidentified local residents.
