The complainant, Ali Hasan Abidi of Rustam Nagar, stated in his FIR that Rani of the same locality sold her one-year-old daughter Sahiba to a woman journalist.

In the course of a sting operation, the journalist had contacted a broker Babu who asked for Rs 2,000, assuring a minor girl.

Babu later introduced Rani to the buyer and the woman handed over her daughter, saying that she was facing acute financial crunch and was unable to bring up her child. Rani also claimed she had got merely Rs 500 in the deal.
