As the world takes stock of its depleting natural resources on Monday— on the World Environment Day — the Indian government seems to have decided that children are the safest bet when it comes to protecting our environment and ecology.

Concerned over the rapid rate at which the environment is depleting, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest is seeking to strengthen the National Green Corps (NGC).

The NGC aims to spread ecological awareness among students and set up eco-clubs in schools. "What we should do with our environment depends on our attitude. The only way to change the attitude is to start from children. They don't have vested interests, they are easy to be convinced and they are the future," said deputy secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Uday Shankar on Sunday.

Initially, the NGC had planned to set up eco-clubs in 100 schools in all districts across the country.

Impressed by the success of the scheme, the ministry has now revised the target to 150 schools for each district. The government has also decided to grant Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 every year to each club.
