China mourns Boston marathon victim

A wave of sympathy from citizens across China has marked the news that one of the three who died in the Boston bombings on Monday was a Chinese student, reports Sutirtho Patranobis.

The deceased was identified as a Chinese student from the northeastern province of Shenyang, studying at the Boston University.

Her friend and fellow student at the university, identified as Zhou Danling, also injured in the blast is recuperating in the hospital. She has undergone two surgeries since being admitted to Boston Medical Center, and is now in stable condition.

Quoting the University website, state-run Xinhua said the deceased was one of three friends who watched the race near the finish line. The third BU student was unharmed.

The other two dead in the explosions had been identified as Krystle Campbell and eight-year-old Martin Richard.

Thousands of netizens expressed sympathy over the incident and a photograph of the deceased picked up from a Chinese social media website was reposted many times.

Hours before she died, she posted a picture of her breakfast on Weibo and commented “My wonderful breakfast.”

Chinese leaders and the government are deeply concerned about Chinese nationals who were injured or killed in the recent Boston Marathon bombing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Wednesday. Hua made the remarks at a daily press briefing.

Earlier, Officials from the Chinese Consulate General in New York confirmed Tuesday that a Chinese national died in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing, adding that another national was injured, but is in stable condition. Hua said the foreign ministry and Consulate General in New York have contacted the relatives of the deceased victim and consulate officials have visited the injured victim.
