After Himachal Pradesh police shed its colonial Khaki dress to don smarter blue uniform, cops will now have to squeeze into their uniforms and hit rigrous physical training to slim down to chase criminals.

The state’s Director General of Police, D S Manhas issued a circular to the police chiefs across 12 districts to identify the chubby cops. “There is need to improve physical conditions of overweight cops” DGP Manhas told Hindustan Times, over telephone from Shimla. The police force in state comprises strength of more than 18,000 personnel’s.

The identified obese cops will undergo rigorous physical training at Armed Police Training Centre in Daroh in Kangra district. According to the program being chalked out, chubby cops will be put under strict diet apart from following rigorous exercise routine.

Although circular was issued two weeks ago but till far only few of the district Police chiefs have forwarded the list of overweight police personnel’s. Since number of fat cops was below the expected figures police headquarters have asked Superintendent of Police to re- survey police force in the districts to identify more overweight cops.

According to information, so far only 27 overweight cops have been identified. “Directions have been issued to provide fresh list of overweight cops” said Superintendent of Police Welfare Rajinder Bhatia. Not only men constable the police headquarters have ordered the overweight cops to get themselves in shape. The identified cops will be treated for other diseases related to obesity, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart desease, kidney problems and liver disease.

Kangra police was first to identify the fat cops. More than one dozen cops serving in district police were found overweight. The list also includes five women constables, currently posted in different offices in district.

Additional Director General of Police, Armed Police and Training, Sumesh Goel said Armed Police Training centre has chalked out many programs fat cops “ The identified overweight cops will have to undergo different physical training programs” said Goel when reached.

Police has also proposed to hold de-addiction camps for cops who prefer Bacchus over duty. Till far police headquarter has received a name of 50 police personnel’s, addicted to alcohol But the officials say that the number could be much higher. Large majority of alcohol addicts comprise the lower ranks and constable.

Surveys in the past have revealed that alcohol addiction was more amongst constable due to the high stress level and the long duty hours. However the police officials do not agree to findings of the survey. “Alcohol addictions amongst constable cannot be linked to work places,” says Kangra SSP Dr Atul Fulzele.

Police has planned many stress busters programs for the alcohol addict cops. Officials said that police will engage services of the experts from Chinmaya Organization of Rural Development CORD, Tapovan which runs series of programs for empowering the rural population and also runs a de-additiction program to fight rising alcoholism in the villages.
