The state has assured a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry into the sale of tribal land to celebrities by wind power company Suzlon in Nandurbar and Dhule districts.

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Twinkle Khanna are among those who have purchased land, alleged the Opposition members.

The assurance came after the Opposition members created a ruckus in the Legislature, demanding an investigation into the matter.

“The government will set up a CID inquiry to see if any wrong doing has been committed,” Vinay Kore minister for Non Conventional Energy assu-red in the Legislative Council.

The opposition members in both the houses alleged that Suzlon had bought land from tribals at cheaper rates with government’s help and sold the same land at exorbitant sum to celebrities like Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Twinkle Khanna.

“The former revenue minister by amending a Government Resolution connived with Suzlon to buy land from tribals at a pittance. The land was then sold at a steep amount to celebrities,” said Opposition Leader Ramdas Kadam in the assembly.

Kadam alleged that the state and Suzlon had procured land for Rs 250 to Rs 300 crore and sold it off at higher prices of over Rs 5,000 crore. Kadam also alleged that many tribals were tricked into signing agreements.

The government clarified that a comprehensive policy is being prepared by the state government which would lay guidelines over land deals for windmill projects and it would benefit tribals.

A separate committee headed by a retired secretary and two additional chief secretaries from the revenue and non-conventional energy department will also probe the charges, Kore added.
