The police have planned to put many areas of the city under close surveillance by installing around 200 CCTVs with advanced zoom-in features.
A survey has already been conducted by a German security company on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and other crowded places like shopping malls and busy road crossings as part of the Outdoor Surveillance System (OSS) project launched by the Haryana Police.
“We have identified the sites where these CCTVs would be installed. All the malls, shopping centers, busy crossing as well as the Gurgaon Expressway would come under the CCTV surveillance. At present we are working on maps and designing,” said joint commissioner of police Alok Mittal.
The state government had already sanctioned a budget in 2007 for the installation of CCTVs at crucial places in the city.
According to the police, the step will help them manage traffic and trace those criminals who take advantage of crowd. “A number of cases came to light when criminals committed crime and managed to escape. If these sites will have CCTVs, police can trace them easily,” said Mittal.
The CCTVs will have pan, tilt and zoom facilities and can take pictures with clear visibility. “The CCTV footage can be crucial to solve any case. Recently, we have seen its importance in the toll attendant murder case in which the accused were arrested with the help of CCTV cameras, said Mittal.
