DOES THE lady wear the pants in the mayoral household? The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) food and civil supplies department appears to think so.
The department began the disbursement of fresh general category ration cards on Monday by issuing a document made out in the name of Mayor Uma Shashi Sharma instead of spouse Dr Santosh Sharma. Ration cards normally bear the name of head of the family.
“Mahapaur main hoon lekin ghar ke mukhiya to yeh hi hain,” (I may be the Mayor but my husband is the head of the family) the Mayor smilingly remarked to departmental in charge Anil Bindal when the ration card was handed over. Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma and Bindal were also issued ration cards during the ceremony at the Mayor’s office.
An estimated three lakh general category and 1.86 lakh below poverty line (BPL) ration cards are to be issued to those residing within municipal limits. The issuance of fresh ration cards comes after a survey commissioned by the Centre revealed large-scale irregularities in card disbursement.
“A total of 1.20 lakh applications were received for general category ration cards. Of these 70,000 have been verified and we have forwarded 5,000 forms to each of the zone offices for disbursing the documents,” revealed Bindal.
