IN A major achievement, a City youth has bagged patent for the design of a syringe that is truly disposable in the sense that there is no scope of its being reused.
The innovation by Shailendra Kumar Birani, a resident of Danish Nagar, could prove to be of great use for everyone from patients, doctors, hospital managements, government and even manufacturers because of the strictly one-time use nature of the syringe.
The Patent Office of the Government of India has awarded patent number 202881 to the innovation of Shailendra Kumar Birani titled ‘disposable syringe with break to seal for use and locking of parts feature’ on November 27. Birani, who has done his MSc in Biotechnology and is presently involved in some more research projects, had developed the design of the truly disposable syringe in year 2004 and had applied for the patent then.
The features that make the syringe totally safe against reuse are a built-in seal that would get broken during use and cannot be recreated unless at manufacturing level while the middle part (tube part the medicine is stored) and the part between the tube and piston would get locked. The needle would have a provision of rotating 360 degrees, but would get locked once the syringe is used, Birani told the Hindustan Times.
He said that these features would ensure that the syringe is never reused, making the intravenous administration of the medicine totally safe. The doctors and nurses would find it easier and safer to handle as there would be no chance of reuse by mistake, the hospital administrations would not have to bother about its safe disposal for the fear of reuse, the manufacturers would be benefited as more number of syringes would be sold and the government would be saved of the effort to monitor safe disposal of syringes, he added.
Birani said that since the only addition component in the syringe is the built-in plastic seal, it would increase the cost of manufacture by only one paise per syringe and would not be a burden on the manufacturers. The manufacturers could obtain the design of the syringe –which is suitable for syringe manufacture machine of any make - from him, Birani said.
The youngster said that he would appeal to either the State Government to support him financially or would expect the industrialists to approach him for the design. He has given credit of his success to the continuing support his father N S Birani. Coincidentally, Shailendra received the patent for his innovation on the 50th birthday of his father on Monday.
