Oscar-winning filmmaker Mel Gibson fears civilisation as a whole is in decline and the world may well end soon.

Gibson feels that the fate of the present world could echo that of the Mayan people he depicts in his new movie "Apocalypto", reports contactmusic.com.

He says: "The things that happened right before their downfall are occurring in our society right now. People think that modern man is so enlightened, but we're susceptible to the same forces."
