Two groups of people clashed on the issue of over-speeding of vehicles at the Marina Beach in Chennai late on Wednesday night and burnt a number of two-wheelers and damaged cars.
Trouble broke out after some locals objected to the over-speeding of two-wheelers by some persons, leading to an
altercation between the two groups, police said.
The two groups set fire to two-wheelers and smashed windscreens of cars parked on the Marina beach.
City Police Commissioner T Rajendran visited the spot. Police said no one was injured and the situation was under control. However, security was beefed up along the Marina with hundreds of policemen guarding the area which has
slums dotting the shoreline, especially at Foreshore Estate.
The Marina Beach has, of late, turned out to be a haven for bikers. Meanwhile, a two-day review meeting of District
Collectors and Superintendents of Police to be chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is being held here today which is expected to discuss the law and order issue.
