A class nine student was run over by a speeding bus on Saturday morning while she was on her way to school in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch district, sparking a rampage by angry villagers who set the vehicle on fire, police said.

The villagers also staged a road block with the body of the girl, identified as Seema Suthar, before district administration and police officials pacified the villagers.

The villagers also assaulted the driver of the bus, hired by a local college Gyanoday Mahavidyalaya.

The villagers withdrew their agitation only after the college administration handed over a cheque of Rs three lakh to Seema’s family and also promised free education to two of the sisters, according to additional superintendent of police (ASP) Rakesh Kumar Sagar.

The incident occurred under Nayagaon police limit, about nine km from Neemuch headquarters at around 8 am.

The villagers were demanding compensation of Rs 10 to 15 lakh.

College director Madhuri Anil Chourasiya said the administration decided to accept the deceased family members’ and villagers demand for providing free education to two of the deceased’s sisters.

Police later arrested the driver of the bus.
