A Thane Municipal Corporation clerk saved a four-year-old boy from drowning in Kachrali lake opposite the civic body headquarters on Wednesday.
“I was at work and Hitesh was at home with my mother when he sneaked out to play at the lake. where he slipped and fell,” said his mother, Darshana Gavale.
The clerk, Sandeep Samant (35), had just left the headquarters to meet a friend at the Ganesh Temple near the lake.
“I saw a crowd gathered around the lake. When I went closer, I saw a boy drowning. I dove in,” said the Kalwa resident.
The lake has a playground adjacent to it and always has a security guard. The watchmen, however, came after Samant had saved Hitesh.
Hitesh was taken to a private hospital, where the doctor asked Gavale to admit him to the ICU.
“I refused as I can’t afford it. My mother, a domestic help and I, a beautician are the only breadwinners,” said Gavale, adding that Hitesh’s condition was better.
