CLT20: pull of India still tugs at heartstrings of T&T players

Amid the innings break of Trinidad & Tobago’s match against the Titans, Ravi Rampaul and Sunil Narine were bowling on a side wicket at the Motera.

For a person not well-versed with the teams, mistaking the two to be Indians on the basis of appearance and name could be a possibility.

A glance around the park, where the rest of the teammates were loosening up, could only add to the confusing. With at least six in the 15-member squad of Indian-origin, these trips to their ancestral land makes it feel like home away from home.

And the overwhelming support from the crowd during Monday’s game would not allow them to miss Trinidad either.

“It is always special to come to India, we feel comfortable here. My great, great grandparents were from here but I don’t know where exactly they were from,” captain Denesh Ramdin, also with Indian roots, told HT.

“It is special not only for me but so many boys in the team. We want to go and explore our roots that were there long ago, before they were taken to the Caribbean,” explained Ramdin.

However, there is one box that remains to be ticked on the wish list of these players. “Someday, we would like to visit places like the Taj Mahal because the tight schedule does not permit us to,” he said.
