Clues in hand, but no headway

india Updated: Oct 22, 2006 11:10 IST

DESPITE CONCRETE clues about the mastermind behind the sensational killing of Lucknow Public School (LPS) owner CP Singh, police are still groping in the dark for shooters hired for the job.

Initially, the police team engaged in the investigation had collected vital clues about the killers and subsequently got a tip-off leading to the mastermind. But, the suspect applied his influence in the corridors of power and evaded police interrogation. Police officials were issued directives from powers that be to nab the shooters first and collect the exact information about the person who orchestrated the killing.

Accordingly, the police team launched a hunt for the hired criminals. The cops had specific details about one of the shooters staying in the trans-Gomti area before the attack on CP Singh. The shooter stayed in the same house for two days after executing the killing. By the time, the police team swung into action he shifted to a safe hideout provided by an influential MLA in an eastern UP district.

The cops laid a trap and even camped in the district waiting for the criminal to come out of the den. But, the shooter remained elusive and the team was called back later by the senior officials.

CP Singh’s erstwhile partner-turned-competitor MLC SP Singh too made all efforts to get the case investigated by the premier investigating agency. He had even raised the question in upper house during a recent session. CP Singh and SP Singh had a dispute over using the name ‘LPS’.

However, losing hope to pin down the shooters, the cops are now engaged in other routine job instead of probing the case further.
