Chief minister Omar Abdullah said the students equipped with knowledge and understanding have to take on the world with confidence and determination "You are empowered individuals, but have social responsibilities", he said in his address at the convocation of the Jammu University on Monday.
"The degrees validate your intellectual capacities, capabilities and academic credentials and integrity. However, it's just the beginning as more significant challenges lie ahead," he said.
The CM said though the challenges before the students are immense, he has no doubt that they will make better world for themselves and also for the people.
Omar said the universities, to use a metaphor, is the hardware of the nature of development while the students and intellectuals are its software where both exist in a symbiotic relationship and find sustenance and nourishment from each other.
"No one is immune from the winds of change and those who do not master this change will be severely disadvantaged," said Omar.
Omar Abdullah said, "In the present new world order, we must shine within to radiate outward. We must allow wide space and scope for human agency and unleash the creative potential to attain new highs," he said.
The chief minister said that the state has great institutions of learning and development and the people are proud inheritors and legates of glorious intellectual traditions that go back to millennia.
"It is these fine traditions that we need to build upon and use them for a more vigorous transformation to keep us ahead in bringing change and new learning, which can happen when intellectuals work together to master the change and transformation," he said.
