The recent hike in petrol and domestic gas prices has upset household budgets. But those running their kitchens and vehicles on natural gas have been spared of the fallout of the hike.
According to Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) officials, the company supplying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to vehicles and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to households, there is no change in the rates of the natural gas.
CNG and PNG will continue to be available at Rs 18.90 per kilogram and Rs 13.52 per standard cubic metre for Delhiites.
"The CNG rates depend on the input price of natural gas and taxes and duties. It has nothing to do with rising crude oil prices," a senior IGL official said. In fact, CNG prices were recently reduced by 30 paise per kilogram due to two per cent reduction in excise rates in the union budget this year, the official added.
There are over 2.3 lakh vehicles running on CNG in Delhi. Over 1.25 lakh households get PNG supply.
With petrol prices shooting up every now and then, IGL officials said people now have more reasons to go for the green fuel. "People running their vehicles on CNG save 70-75 per cent on fuel cost in comparison to petrol-run vehicles," an IGL official said.
PNG connection depends on the network of the piped gas laid by IGL. A large number of residential colonies are covered by PNG network in Delhi. "We have our network across the city, especially in areas with multi-storeyed flats. We want to spread our network to NCR as well," the official added.
